I'm Sarah DeLong-Duhon, a photographer based in Iowa.

Naturalist, mycologist, artist, biologist, and photographer extraordinaire. 20+ years of experience behind the lens.

I've been photographing since I could hold a camera. In fact, you couldn't unglue me from the viewfinder as a child, and my family always teased me for it. A camera isn't just a piece of equipment to me - it's a partner in crime, helping me capture moments in time to look back upon later and reminisce. Photography is just a part of how I see the world, and I can't imagine life without it.
Whether it is documenting rare fungi and insects, or capturing moments with my pets and people, I know how to represent life in the best light possible. I relish the editing process, which I approach with the attitude of representing a feeling, a memory, and a place in time.
The majority of my photos see only minimal edits, without color grading or object removal. I seek out natural light sources - sunlight filtering through autumn leaves, the cool tones of dusk, or the clear, soft clarity of a newly rising sun - and use them to my advantage.
My three tenets are Curiosity, Kindness, and Truth, and these are represented in the things I create.
Curiosity is an important part of creativity - constantly looking for new angles, new light, and new subjects. What haven't I tried before that I have the opportunity to do now? How can I understand my client better, so they will look back on these photos and see themselves as they wished to be seen?
There is always room for kindness in this life, for setting aside your preconceptions and meeting people where they are. Not everyone sees the world in the same way, and the practice of photography trained me for that. Being the leader of a nonprofit and having given dozens of talks, walks, and presentations helps a lot too!
Truth is arguably the most important - not to everyone, but it is to me. You could snap a selfie with your phone and feed it into an AI model to get a passable portrait, but there won't be an ounce of humanity in it. Personal connection with other people is what keeps the world real, and by choosing to support an ethical photographer, you are doing your part to ensure a future rooted in reality. Now is the time to invest in your community and the arts.
My commitment to community isn't just for show. I believe that everyone deserves access to good photography, which is why I have implemented a pay-as-you-can program for small nonprofits and low-income families. If you are not sure if you qualify, just send me a message!
